Organize for Success!

In case you haven't figured it out from my previous posts on the perils of being a senior, I'm quite preoccupied with the future.

I'm constantly thinking ahead and trying to figure out what my life is going to be like after graduation. Sometimes, this is really exciting and motivational, but other times I'm filled with panic at the very thought.

I could use one of these buttons.
Source
Thankfully, I've come to learn that I shouldn't give in to my initial panicky thoughts. In general, things have a way of working out in life. Better yet, I have many opportunities to prepare myself so that I'm better suited for success. Preparation is especially important for me now, since I've started on my law school applications. If I don't take the proper steps to prepare myself, the whole process will be a lot more stressful than it needs to be.

In the past few weeks, the importance of organization has been a key theme. Part of being prepared is being organized. It's a lot easier said than done, but if you put in the effort you'll find that good organization takes a lot of excess stress off your shoulders.

I actually get really excited about organization. That probably says something about me.

HOW TO ORGANIZE YOUR POST-GRAD PREP
  • Make a list of all the jobs/internships/grad schools you want to apply to
    • This step is an important starting point. When applying to schools or for a job, you probably have more than one place in mind.  And, it's not uncommon that as a senior, you may be applying simultaneously for jobs and grad school, or for jobs and post-grad internships.  All the more reason to keep track!
    • You might think that you just "know" all the places you'll apply to, but keeping them all in your brain and not on paper is a great way to forget things. Trust me.
    • Also, having a list will give you a solid foundation to add to or take from. Don't underestimate the power of lists!
  • Check deadlines ASAP and note them
    • Once you have your initial list, begin by finding out the deadlines for every application. Don't assume that they'll all be due around the same time - better to be safe than to miss a deadline.
  • Break it down
    • The application process, especially for graduate schools, is lengthy. There are a lot of steps involved. It's easy to become overwhelmed by all the things you need to get done, so it's important to break it down.
    • Take the application process and turn it into a bunch of small steps. That way you can check off each individual step as you go, which in itself is super rewarding.
    • Here are some steps from my breakdown of law school applications:
      • Ask for recommendation letters
      • Write a personal statement
      • Request transcript
      • Take LSAT
  • Excel sheets are your friend
    • One of the biggest epiphanies I've had this semester is that Excel is actually a really useful program! I shouldn't have shunned it as something meant for people who like math.
    • With Excel, you can make a spreadsheet listing all the places you want to apply to, as well as different factors you want to consider.
    • This is a fantastic method if you're trying to choose between jobs/schools. You can compare your options on things like location, tuition/salary, and benefits, all in one place.
  • Take advantage of the services available to you
It's that easy! No cheating necessary.

With those tips in mind, you can make yourself so organized that people might actually think you have your entire life together! Little do they know...

The Gap Year Experience: Exploring Post-Grad Opportunities

The phrase "gap year" usually brings to mind some of your peers who took time off to travel the world, cross the country, and/or do some community service after high school and before college. Or maybe it reminds you of your friend of a friend who just needed a break from University and decided to take a year to himself...

Nowadays, the term "gap year" can be used to describe a new and exciting phenomenon: Students today are taking anywhere from a few weeks to a few years off after college to work in short-term jobs, internships, or community service programs.

And there are many reasons why that might be... Maybe some worked hard in college, and now want the opportunity to explore and figure out what they truly want. Other people are looking to work for a year before grad school or med school or law school. And for some people, this time serves to gain work experience or give back to the community and/or the world... And maybe even make a few new friends along the way:

"Us Jumbos gotta stick together!"
Career gurus all around are calling this new trend the "Gap Year Experience."

Here is a very defined definition given on Spotlight on Careers (username: spotlightpass and password: liberalarts2017): A gap year experience is a purposeful full-time volunteer or paid opportunity to explore or gain life and/or work experience in a field before going into a full-time job, graduate, or professional program. A gap experience is not an excuse to do nothing, instead, this time should be spent intentionally exploring and preparing for what comes after.

Some gap experience programs that you might have already heard of include Teach for America, the Peace Corps, and teaching English abroad. This phenomenon has been going on for years, but recently the trend has sky-rocketed into oblivion as a new and cool thing to do.

These days, a gap experience can literally be anything you want it to be-- It can be a way to save money, a way to volunteer your time, an excuse to travel, move to another place, or stay home. You can have it in a box; you can have it with a fox! You can use it to chase your passions and master a trade you already know and love... Or learn something new and potentially discover new passions!

It's always good to try something new...
The real question is: Is a gap year experience a good career move?

We think so!

Gap Year Experiences give graduates an opportunity to learn more about themselves, their careers, and the world so that they can continue on their career paths to success. Whether or not a graduate had an opportunity to go abroad during their undergrad years, having a gap experience could be a great opportunity to travel to a new country and even learn a different language. And many times, your gap experience will make it clear as to whether or not you should pursue additional education, and if so, what type of additional education you should pursue!

The trick to having a successful gap experience is to have one deliberately. "Whatever you do, do it intentionally," says Spotlight on Careers. However you choose to spend your gap experience, be conscious of what you plan on giving and taking from it.

So where do you start? How can you find an organization that offers short-term work opportunities like fellowships, internships, and volunteer opportunities?

More resources are available to you on the Tufts Career Center website under Fellowships and Gap Year.

But we hope you can make it!

Best regards,
Until next time,
Nirvanna

HIRING: Be the Next Career Center Ambassador!

Hey Career-Savvy Readers,

It is time to pass on the torch. I am graduating this year from the position of Tufts Career Center's blogging/ social media ambassador (and from Tufts). This means the we are looking for a student with strong writing abilities and career-drive to help plan and execute Tufts Career Center's social media communications strategy for the year of 2013-2014!

I have had an incredible experience working for the Career Center. It was so rewarding to create content on a topic I am deeply passionate about, help students perfect their career development online and offline, and watch our blog traffic grow by fourfold!

On the job, I connected with CEOs and HR directors, honed my interview and writing skills, and picked up some new ones in HTML and Blogger Stat too...But by far, one of the biggest perks of the job has been getting access to the 'inside' resources such as weekly mini career counseling sessions from my supervisor and first notice on relevant events and contacts!

Ready to apply? Fill out the application today!

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions through the "Ask the Ambassador" tab above.

Good Luck!

Angela Sun
