4 Ways to Boost Your Career Search Over Thanksgiving Break!

It can be hard to find time for career exploration over the short Thanksgiving Break, so here are four quick and easy ways to stay on top of it in between Thanksgiving festivities!

1.      Explore the Career Options for your Major

What Can I Do With This Major? is a great database to learn about the typical career areas and the types of employers that hire people with each major, as well as strategies to make you a more marketable candidate. Whether you’re exploring multiple majors or just jobs specific to your field this database can really help boost the process!

2.      Update Your Jumbo Jobs Profile

Search hundreds of opportunities with Jumbo Jobs, our recruiting platform to connect students and employers for jobs, internships and career events. Set up search agents using custom criteria, perfect your resume with the Career Center’s guide, and then upload your resume for employers to view.

3.      Spotlight On Careers

Spotlight on Careers is a career development website for liberal arts college students. Use its flexible search functions to sample employers in different industries, gather information on select jobs and get career-specific interview tips and resume advice (log in with username: spotlightpass and password: liberalarts2017).

4.      Check out the TIP (Tufts Internship Profiles) Book!

The TIP book is a collection of summer internship summaries and advice provided by Tufts students for Tufts students. After reviewing the internship profiles, students can contact fellow students through the Tufts directory for more information. This is a great inside peek at many internships done by Tufts students, and a valuable resource for you in your internship search.

And as always, visit the Tufts Career Center website for lots of great career resources, advice, and events! Have a wonderful Thanksgiving break!

Really? The Career Center is open during the summer? It sure is!

Yes, the Tufts Career Center is OPEN during the summer!

As we transition into the summer months, I want to remind students that the Tufts Career Center is open 9am-5pm throughout the summer.  (Yes, we do work; I always find it amusing when students come back to campus in the fall and ask about my summer break.)

Summer appointments: If you're not in the area, you can schedule a telephone, Skype or email appointment with a career counselor.

How to make the most of your summer: Check out the tips on the front page of our website for how to make the most of your summer.  We've tailored our tips by class year.  Here are just a few of the options we suggest:
  • Rising sophomore or first year (if you're a first year, welcome to Tufts, and kudos for checking out our blog before you even start!!) and wondering where Tufts students intern?  Browse our TIP (Tufts Internship Profiles) Book.
  • The Career Center website is packed with so many phenomenal resources that many students don't have time to go through everything during the school year.  So, it makes sense to dive in during the summer months.  Here are my personal favorites for resources that are often overlooked (this would make a great blog post!):
    • O*Net Online: essentially a careerapedia, otherwise known as an occupational database, but that's a dull descriptor
    • What can I do with this major?:  great for the "choosing a major" phase, but also extremely useful after you've chosen your major and when you're thinking to yourself: "OK, now what, exactly, can I do with this major after I graduate?"
    • Candid Career Videos: so many videos, so little time . . . but most videos are under 4 mins! Here's what you can learn if you have 15 mins to spare:

Presenting: The TIP Book

Hot off the presses (actually, it's online), the TIP book is a collection of internship descriptions and advice provided by Tufts students for Tufts students. We in the Tufts Career Center are excited to provide Tufts students with 200 internship profiles packed with helpful advice from your classmates.

To browse the profiles, or search by career field, type of internship, location, student class year and major, check out the book at http://careers.tufts.edu/students/tip.asp

As you review the internship profiles, keep the following in mind:

  • A successful internship search involves thorough research and information gathered from multiple sources. Thus, we encourage you to use these profiles as a complement to your other research.
  • The Internship Section of the Career Center website provides search tips and internship listing sites, including our databases - Jumbo Jobs, LACN and EngIn - where you’ll find thousands of internships for Tufts students. You’ll also find information about internship funding resources and much more.
  • Students who have listed their names on their profiles may be contacted for more information. Remember to thank them for sharing their time and advice with you!
  • A career counselor can help you clarify your goals and direct you to other helpful internship search resources. Come to daily drop-in hours or call 617.627.3299 for an appointment.
  • Our weekly Career eNews features career events that will help you learn about careers, find internships, and connect with alumni and employers.
  • Mark your calendar for our spring fairs: Sci-Tech Fair, Wednesday, February 13, 2013 (for science, technology, and engineering) Internship Fair, Wednesday, February 27, 2013 (for media, marketing, communications, education, non-profits, arts, finance, business, healthcare, and government)

Thank You to all Tufts students who contributed to this publication!  Want to be included in next year's edition?  Look out for an e-mail this summer asking for submissions!
