By Angela Sun

Maybe you're thinking India, maybe Nicaragua. Wherever your wanderlust fancies, Going Global can help you to not just get there, but get hired there.

Going Global is a resource for jobseekers with horizons around the world. As a Tufts student, you are already subscribed to the resource through the Tufts Career Center. A particularly useful feature for Tufts students considering employment abroad is the Going Global 'Country Career Guides'.

Going Global currently has 40 detailed 'Country Career Guides' updated annually that provide:
  • Job search resources: sites, fairs, government-sponsored employment offices, headhunters/recruiters, internship programs and temporary staffing agencies
  • Employment outlook and key industry trends
  • Trade and professional organization information: issues of special concern for foreign professionals, education requirements, trade associations, and industry web sites
  • Top company profiles
  • Business resources: trade councils, chambers of commerce, professional and social networking organizations, online telephone directories and business publications
  • Work permit and visa regulations
  • Finance and compensation information: taxes, cost of living, medical insurance, etc.
  • Resume/CV writing guidelines and examples
  • Interview advice
  • Cultural advice

The value of these guides is that they provide country-specific information within the aforementioned generic topics. For example, Going Global reveals that in Germany, application expectations are particularly stringent and formal. Applicants typically send in a 'Bewerbungsmappe' (application folder), containing "a cover letter, a CV with photograph, copies of written references, certificates, and proof of work experience." In China, networking and establishing oneself in the local arena is particularly beneficial. That's why Going Global recommends taking the opportunity to settle down or visit the city before diving into the job hunt as part of the holistic application. These guides will no doubt help you effectively leverage your competitiveness as a Tufts student in a foreign market.

For the first-time user, accessing this resource can be a journey onto itself. But have no fear, the Career Center blog is here. Here are step-by-step screenshot instructions for how to access Going Global and more exclusive resources through the Tufts Career Center.
